LIZ, much like the actress and activist Elizabeth Taylor that it was named after, is singularly iconic. Developed, designed, brought to life and managed by an exceptionally reputable team including Whitman-Walker Health, Fivesquares Development, Selldorf Architects, Future Green Studio, CORE, Urban Pace and Gates Hudson, LIZ has created its own class of luxury residential in Washington D.C., a new model for mission-focused development, and a new benchmark for achievable rent per square foot in the overall submarket.

Our partners at Fivesquares Development had the imaginative vision to combine two historic structures in the heart of 14th St., the Belmont Garage and Elizabeth Taylor Medical Center, into a new block-long mixed use development. The result is a stunning new cultural hub for luxury living, public art and new retail.

LIZ was developed to create an annuity to support the incredible work that Whitman-Walker has been doing in the community for over 40 years. LIZ is named after Elizabeth Taylor to honor the historic impact that she and Whitman-Walker Health continue to have on the communities that Whitman-Walker serves – providing a place for stigma-free care for those affected by HIV and for those who do not feel welcomed in other health care settings. With that tenet of community at the core of the development, our colleagues at Fivesquares knew that our personalized approach to building community within communities would be the perfect fit for the management of this very special location, and we were brought in as a partner during final construction.

With so many factors adding to the extraordinary nature of LIZ- the first DC design by Selldorf Architects, the attention to creation of a community through placemaking and the use of unique materials, landscaping, and art from curb to curb, and the unique partnership model for mission-focused development to name just a few- Gates Hudson continues to focus on the care and attention our expertly trained staff provides to our discerning residents and our community that expect and deserve our thoughtful engagement.
